British School Bern

Primary

Primary at The British School Bern is a time of discovery, growth, and joy in learning. Children are encouraged to explore their strengths, ask questions, and develop the skills that help them flourish both in and out of the classroom. Guided by our school values, pupils gain confidence, build friendships, and learn to make positive choices—laying the foundation for a lifelong love of learning

Primary Years in the British curriculum are made up of Key Stages 1 and 2.

In Key Stage 1, students are in years 1 and 2, and have moved on from the Early Years curriculum. They are learning to use the skills they gained in their Early Years as building blocks for deeper learning. The core topics covered are listed in the chart below. In addition to these subjects, they are also learning to work independently, make healthy choices, and how to more fully integrate the British School Bern values into their work and learning. Students attend traffic garden and bike safety workshops with the Bern police department.

In Key Stage 2 (Years 3–6), pupils build on Key Stage 1 subjects while developing self-awareness and understanding how their choices impact themselves and others. They are encouraged to become independent, purposeful learners guided by the British School values. In Years 5 and 6, students also take part in internet safety and anti-bullying workshops run by the Bern police.
