Curriculum

BSB is committed to providing diverse and enriching academic experiences that empower our students to excel in their education journey. Our academic offerings are designed to cater to a wide range of interests, ages, and aspirations.

BSB Secondary offers 3 distinct curriculum options for maximum flexibility and to allow students to tailor their educational path to their unique goals and preferences.

A) British International Curriculum

Our accredited program, recognised by Pearson-Edexcel, is structured across different levels:

  • Lower Secondary (Key Stage 3, Years 7, 8 and 9): The foundation stage where students build essential skills and knowledge.
  • International GCSE (Key Stage 4, Years 10 and 11): A more advanced stage focusing on specialised subjects and preparation for higher-level studies.
  • A-Levels (Key Stage 4, Years 12 and 13): The pinnacle of the British International Curriculum, where students sit for A-Levels exams, paving the way for direct university applications worldwide.

Completion of this curriculum equips students with a globally recognised qualification, opening doors to prestigious universities around the world.

B) American Curriculum

Designed for middle school (grades 7 and 8) and high school (grades 9 to 12) students, this curriculum is made possible through a partnership with the Forward International Academy (FIA) and US University Pathways. It empowers students to:

  • Earn a U.S. high school diploma.
  • Seamlessly transition to American colleges or universities.

FIA is recognised by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction. The curriculum is Cognia accredited, and the College Board code is 917141.

C) Portuguese National Curriculum

Our Portuguese+ curriculum provides students with the flexibility to pursue higher education in Portugal:

  • Grades Covered: Grades 7 to 12.
  • Available Study Pathways in Secondary Education (High School): Science and Technology & Social and Economic Sciences.
  • Material is completely in Portuguese.

Students will be fully prepared for the Portuguese National Exams. Additionally, they can combine the Portuguese curriculum with International GCSEs and A-Levels subjects for a truly personalised education.

Moving to BSB Secondary

There are different pathways to start your educational journey with BSB. This depends on student background, residence status and the schoolyear you want to start.

Lower Secondary – Key Stage 3

Lower Secondary is open to all international resident students, as well as all Swiss citizens that have or can obtain a permit from their local education authority. If you are Swiss and would like to come to BSB, please contact us for more information.

Usually, a student is placed in a similar school year that they are currently in, but a placement test ensures the best possible fit, so that the student can progress seamlessly.

Upper Secondary – Key Stage 4 and 5

Upper Secondary is open to all students, regardless of nationality or educational background. Sekundar A, B or C students, as well as students from other European or international educational backgrounds can complete the iGCSE program and then progress to convocational qualifications, the iA-levels program or the BGA UP program. These programs can also be combined with apprenticeships, sports or arts programs. There is usually a placement test and some students can accelerate their progress, when they fulfil the educational requirements.

“ Upper Secondary could be particularly suited to students from Switzerland, who would like to follow a path outside the regular apprenticeship routes, go to university, go international or start the early UP university program. A decent level of English is required, but support for this is available. „

Moving across the years

This diagram shows typical paths, ages and movements that a student can make. The progression of the student is dependent on many factors, including the demands of external programs, such as sport or apprenticeships, the progress of the student and the planning and timing of exams. The BSB program can be moved and adapted to suit each student’s unique needs and circumstances.

BSB’s hybrid Upper School is perfect for students who:
Are motivated self-starters and creative thinkers
Prefer a break from the “traditional” classroom
Juggle training, activities, or travel

Further options

After iGCSEs, students can follow the “Unique Pathway”, an accelerated university program for studies in Business Management, Computing, Sports Management and Hotel and Hospitality management with leading universities around the world.
